Wow That’s a long title.
Anyhow I’ve got it all working. Yes you can Hangouts Group Chat in Pidgin! Here’s a quick intro.
Using the Google Hangouts Browser Extension for Chrome makes ugly popup chat boxes all over your Desktop. You have to have Chrome open or Running in the background to chat in Hangouts, It’s just plain annoying. If only Pidgin (the messaging client) supported Google Hangouts protocol instead of Google talk. Then I could have all my group chats right where I want them. Well Now it can! You simply need a plugin.
For those of you that don’t need help go get the plugin here
Yes It’s free and open source. In fact you will have to compile it to make it work.
Need some help with that no worries. Lets get to it.
First thing to do is open up a terminal window. I’m going to run as the root user because I want to. You could prefix all these commands with “sudo” or you can “sudo su” once. your choice.
- Install Pidgin.
apt-get install pidgin
- Lets Install Some Dependencies.
apt-get install mercurial
apt-get install libprotobuf-c0-dev
apt-get install protobuf-c-compiler
apt-get install libpurple-dev
apt-get install libjson-glib-dev
apt-get install build-essential
- Next Grab the Source Code form the Mercrucial Repository
hg clone https://bitbucket.org/EionRobb/purple-hangouts
- Now Change Directory to where the code was downloaded to
- Now it’s time to Make
make && sudo make install
That’s It for the Install. Not too bad. Some Dependencies. If you have any luck shortening my list please let me know.
Using it is easy as well. Simply load up Pidgin and add a new account. If you did everything correct you will have a nice Drop down lost that will have Hangouts as a choice.
that’s the Basics. Happy Hangouts.
A big thanks to the guys / Projects that made this possible.
